The Malone - Sandlin House
417 Jackson Street, SE

The Malone-Sandlin House was built in 1888 by the Malone family. Originally constructed as a two story, 4-square, it has undergone a number of additions and renovations over the last 121 years. One such renovation was the enclosure of the east porch which enlarged the living room. When the current owners removed a door to what was then the porch, a carpenter's signature on the door frame dated the addition to 1917.

The house passed from the Malone family through 2 additional owners before being bought in the 1930's by Welsh Dinsmore, who owned Dinsmore Furniture in downtown Decatur. The Sandlins bought the house from the Dinsmore's grandson. Several photographs are placed throughout the house that show the appearance of the house when the Sandlins bought it and began a restoration project that has spanned over 30 years.

The last reconstruction project was finished this past summer. The kitchen was gutted, walls torn out and ceiling and cabinets were replaced. The home is furnished with antiques that have been in Mr. Sandlin's family since the early 1800's.
