This year's site for tour refreshments is St. John's Episcopal Church, one of the most beautiful structures in Historic Decatur. After a fire burned St. Paul's Episcopal Church, originally organized in 1867, to the ground in 1888, its parishioners differed over where to rebuild, in Old Decatur or in New Decatur (now Albany).
Finally, about 75 members who wished to build in New Decatur left St. Paul's parish and began plans for St. John's, which was established in 1880 and became a parish in 1891. Constructed for less than $2000, the church building, comprising the present nave and chancel area, was dedicated in 1893. Originally facing north, the building was physically turned around in 1948 to face west. At that time the present entrance and tower were built, and the building was limestone veneered. St. John's interior is modeled after Gothic English parish churches. The sanctuary is open for tour visitors. Visit St. John's web site.
