The Old State Bank
925 Bank Street, NE

The Old State Bank remains at its original site from when it first opened in 1833. The two story structure sports Federal Empire period architecture which was popular in the 1830's. Unique features of the Old State Bank include a first floor banking lobby complete with its original walk-in vault, and a replica of its teller's cage.

This area is being developed to focus on banking in Alabama through a "Museum of Alabama Banking History." The second floor apartment is furnished to reflect the period 1833-1845 and the life of Washington Keyes, the Bank's first cashier and occupant of the apartment. Additional site features include a detached kitchen and period herb garden at the rear of the building; a "Pedestrian Mall" with fountains, at the front of the building; and a two-acre "Founders Park" in front of the site.
